Historic Landings Bring Home Bennu Asteroid Rocks and Dust

Bobo.id – On the last 20 October 2020 the plane space OSIRIS-Rex landed on Asteroid Determining.

Plane space it also carries rock and dust from Asteroid Determining.

Research Objectives OSIRIS-Rex

Since it was first discovered in 1999, the Bennu asteroid has become a research destination.

A probe known as OSIRIS-Rex was specially launched to investigate asteroids that are close to Earth, including Asteroid Bennu.

OSIRIS-REX stands for Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer. This ride was launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida, United States on September 8, 2016.

OSIRIS-Rex approached and began orbiting Asteroid Bennu since the end of 2018.

Regolith collection

For several months OSIRIS-Rex orbited this asteroid and sent its data to Earth to be investigated.

It was only in 2020 that OSIRIS-Rex was moved closer to the asteroid and even landed on its surface.

On this landing, OSIRIS-Rex also collected the so-called rock and dust regolith.

Regolith It will be shipped to Earth and is planned to arrive in March 2021.

Regolith collection was carried out at a location called Nightiangle which is in the northern part of Asteroid Bennu.

Historic Landings

Landing on the asteroid is not the only time this time. Previously there have also been asteroids that were landed by spacecraft.

The asteroid Eros is the first asteroid to be landed by a man-made spacecraft.

However, this is the first time that rock and dust from the asteroid can be picked up and planned to be brought back to Earth.

This is a historic landing that will complement science, especially about asteroids.

This rock and dust sampling uses a system touch and go (TAG) that looks like long sleeves.
