Guide: Special right of termination of motor vehicle insurance
| Reading time: 2 minutes
Actually, the deadline for changing your car insurance has passed. However, policyholders still have options to get out of an unfavorable contract.
SPX/Heidelberg/Cologne. Like every year, November 30th is the deadline for changing car insurance. But if you miss this date, you may be able to make use of a special right of termination later. This exists, among other things, if the insurance company has increased the tariff. If a policyholder receives a higher premium bill, they then have a four-week right to cancel. If an insurance company only informs you about an increase in November, policyholders can still cancel their vehicle insurance until December.
As the comparison portal Verivox has reported, many providers have increased their contributions this year, some even drastically. On average, premiums are currently 14 percent higher than last year. Verivox cites increased claims rates and higher repair costs as the reason for this historic increase, which are driving motor vehicle insurers into the red this year. Many providers have therefore drastically increased their contributions for the coming year in order to compensate for these increased costs.
Incidentally, a premium increase is not always recognizable as such at first glance. Even if the amount to be paid in the future decreases with new tariffs, there may be a de facto increase. Then it is a hidden premium increase that is not perceived as such because it is accompanied by a changed no-claims discount. Because if you move to a lower class, you will pay less. However, parallel increases in contributions can often (partially) offset the savings. Whether the insurance has become more expensive can be easily seen from the so-called comparison amount. If this is below the new contribution, there is a contribution increase, which entitles you to special termination.
Another option for a four-week special notice period arises after damage. The insurance tariff often changes after the claim has been settled, which also allows the policyholder to look for a cheaper alternative.
