The historic forest fires in Canada this year have caused the emission of more than one billion tons of carbon dioxide, an unprecedented level, according to estimates by Canadian authorities, on Friday.
This is approximately equal to the annual emissions of Japan (equivalent to 1.12 billion tons of carbon dioxide in 2021), the fifth largest polluter in the world, and exceeds the annual emissions of the global aviation sector in 2022 (about 0.8 billion tons of carbon dioxide).
“This summer has turned into a real marathon,” said Michael Norton, director general of the Canadian Forest Service, as the country’s west prepares for another heat wave.
He added, “Our preliminary estimates indicate that emissions for the current season exceeded one billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.”
He predicted that the dangers of fires would remain “higher than normal” until September.
