World champion Katie Taylor successfully defended her four world titles in what was marketed as the “biggest fight in the history of women’s boxing” with Amada Serrano from Puerto Rico.

The 35-year-old Irish woman won in New York with 2-1 judges’ votes (96-93, 97-93, 94-96). In front of a sell-out crowd of 19,187 at Madison Square Garden, it was the first women’s main event in the venerable arena’s 140-year history. Other cities are more progressive and have long featured women’s fights as the main attraction.

The fight was largely even. “I had to bang it all out,” Taylor said. The London 2012 Olympic gold medalist and five-time world amateur champion went down once in the fifth of ten rounds, but recovered. Both agreed on a rematch while they were still in the ring.
