Historic Cold Snap Hits Sweden: Coldest January Night in 25 Years Recorded

Nordics∙ Sweden recorded its coldest January night in 25 years on Wednesday. A minimum of 43.6 degrees Celsius was recorded in the Nordics. It was Sweden’s lowest January temperature since 1999, Matthias Lind, a meteorologist at the national weather agency SMHI, told AFP.

In January in 1999 and 1951, minus 49 degrees Celsius (minus 56.2 Fahrenheit) was recorded in Sweden. This is the lowest temperature recorded in January in the country. The lowest temperature on Wednesday was at Kvikjok-Arenjarka station in the north of Sweden. Lind said it was the lowest temperature recorded here since temperature measurements began in 1888. Many other stations in northern Sweden have recorded temperatures below minus 40 degrees.

Trains were disrupted in Sweden and neighboring Finland. The northern Lapland region recorded a seasonal record of minus 38.7 Celsius on Tuesday evening. Several incidents of frozen or burst water supply pipes have also been reported in both countries.
