[Reporter Lin Yizhang/Chiayi Report]Chiayi City Railway Elevation Project is currently in progress. The remains of the transfer platform at Chiayi Station during the Japanese occupation were recently discovered. The Chiayi City Government Cultural Bureau stated today that the transfer platform was a through-line railway built during the Meiji period during the Japanese occupation. It was built during the period when it opened to traffic in 1908 AD and has a history of 116 years. It is the earliest surviving first-generation turntable structure in Taiwan. It is older than the first-generation turntable unearthed in Tainan in 2020 (only the original one remains 1/3) The completeness is better. Today, it was reviewed by the Cultural Resources Review Committee and designated as a monument, and included in the announcement of “Chiayi Station”, a designated historic site in Chiayi City.

The city government held a cultural resources review meeting today. Most members believed that the Chiayi Station transfer platform is of great cultural asset value. During the vote, 8 votes were in favor of the current retention plan, and 2 votes supported the relocation retention plan. Finally, it was decided to retain the current transfer platform and The remains of the transfer platform, the post office, and the train station will be included in the scope of the “Chiayi Station” monument announcement; the Municipal Cultural Bureau stated that the Railway Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation will cooperate in the subsequent changes to the original engineering design to take into account the preservation of cultural assets and major For public construction, the Cultural Affairs Bureau will provide assistance.

Mayor Huang Minhui expressed his respect for the results of the review and thanked the Railway Bureau Engineering Group and the Cultural Resources Committee for their joint efforts in protecting the century-old railway facilities. The on-site preservation plan may have a slight impact on the schedule and funding of the elevated railway in the short term, but from a long-term perspective It can be seen that cultural assets and Taiwan’s railway culture can be preserved. The planning and design architect of the new station, Jian Xueyi, has made appropriate design and spatial adjustments to the existing retention plan. He believes that the subsequent new station of Chiayi Railway Station can not only meet the transportation needs, but also integrate the old and new through the design and transfer The display of Taiwan can give the public a deeper understanding of the historical value of Taiwan’s railway development.

Dr. Yan Tingtian of Yangu Culture Co., Ltd., who conducted the survey, explained at the meeting that the turntable is mainly used for steering and dispatching of locomotives or carriages, or for switching maintenance lines. The remains of the turntable unearthed have an outer diameter of 16.5 meters and an inner diameter of 16.5 meters. The diameter is 15.5 meters. It was built in December 1908. The new fan-shaped garage and turntable were completed in the 1930s and 1940s, or it was abandoned after the Chiayi Station reconstruction project was completed. It was used for about 30 years. The time was short and the accumulation pattern was relatively simple. , to make up for the missing link in the research on the limited surviving remains in the initial stage of the history of railway transportation. The turntable structure itself is generally well preserved, and the traces of early construction techniques and production processes left on its surface are very obvious, making it rare and difficult to reproduce.

The post offices (now the stationmaster’s office) and the carriage control room (now the warehouse), located next to the train station, were constructed at the same time as the station car body. The Cultural Resources Committee believes that the design style and materials of the buildings are almost consistent with the station itself. Although the post office was completed two years after the train station, its structure, form and materials (textured bricks, washed stone floors, etc.), as well as the structural edge treatment and scale proportion of the door and window openings are all consistent with the main building of Chiayi Railway Station. Same, an inseparable part. The conductor’s office is the train driver’s duty room. The façade tiles are dark brown vertical pattern 2-inch glazed tiles. There are still suspected original telecommunications facilities on the roof, including a battery room, a telecommunications room, a telecommunications station, and books. The building was completed around 1928, which is earlier than the current station itself. This building should be a witness of the improvement from the first generation to the second generation of Chiayi Station, and it is enough to be included in the scope of historical sites for preservation and reuse.
