The Champions Leaguethe largest intercollegiate event is changing. Otherwise, groups were… and they are. From this season, the well-known group stage is abolished and its place is taken by the League Phase.
What changes?
Essentially, the 36 groups who will participate there (either directly ticketed, or entered through qualifiers) will all be placed together in a single league.
Instead of six matcheswhich was the case in the group stage, the teams they will play eight matcheshalf at home and the rest away. To emerge the rivals of the teams, there will be classification into four capacity groups of nine groups. Then each group will drawn with two groups originating from each groupincluding where they are. In short, unlike in previous years, the placement of a team in a capacity group does not lead to the avoidance of the rest of the same group.
Qualifying for the knockouts
After the end of the mini-championship of 36 teams, the top eight will directly win the ticket to the “16” phase of the Champions League.
Those who finish from the 9th to 24th place will compete in double knockout matches to qualify for the next stage.
Finally, those who finish from 25th to 36th place will… go home. Contrary to what has been the case until now, there won’t be “relegation” in a lower organization.
The draw and the groups
The draw for the League Phase will take place on afternoon her Thursday at 19:00, unfortunately without a Greek presence, as o PAOK was eliminated by Malmö and will continue in the Europa League, o Olympic will compete in this year’s League Phase of the Europa League and Panathinaikos is claiming entry into its equivalent Conference League against Lance.
