After a selection process, where 36 candidates were presented, Ronald ‘Ron’ Camacho was appointed as the new chief of the North Charleston Police Department, which has an extensive professional career.
“With nearly three decades of law enforcement experience, he is uniquely qualified to lead our department. It has an innovative approach as seen in its Official Wellness programs and Citizen Advisory Committee,” said North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess when announcing the name of the selected chief.
PATH
Originally from Puerto Rico, but raised in New York, Camacho began his career in 1995, when he moved to Pennsylvania to join the York City Police Department.
Camacho served as chief of the Chambersburg Police Department in Pennsylvania and has 29 years of law enforcement experience. After leaving his position as captain of patrol operations with the York Police Department in 2013, he spent time as a police consultant in Afghanistan and was deputy director of training for the US State Department in New Mexico.
The new chief graduated from the 239th session of the FBI National Academy. He holds a doctorate in criminal justice from Penn West University and a master’s degree in criminal justice from Liberty University.
SELECTION
To be considered for this job, Camacho had to pass a background check by the Police Executive Research Forum, a nonprofit organization involved in the city’s process.
Camacho is a veteran police officer who has served in a management role for more than 16 years and has even consulted abroad. He has a doctorate and a master’s degree in criminal justice.
He says he is excited to get started in North Charleston and hopes to have many hours and days ahead of him in the near future, but it will be worth it to learn about the new city he will serve and call home.
