Hispanic veterinarian stole medicines

Elisa Sánchez, a veterinary technician, was found guilty of grand theft and criminal possession of stolen property after a jury trial , announced the district attorney of the Putnam County (NY), Robert V. Tendy.

Sánchez, previously an employee of “Guardian Veterinary Specialists” in the small Southeastern city of New York, was found guilty of stealing from the premises life-saving oncology drugs used to treat animals with cancer.

Members of the County Sheriff’s Office responded to that veterinary facility on July 28, 2022, after co-workers saw Sanchez placing these medications in his personal bag, the prosecutor’s office reported in a statement.

Employees had already observed Sánchez do this on previous occasions before reporting her to management, which ultimately led to her arrest and dismissal.

District Attorney Tendy said, “It is very sad that a veterinary technician steals essential cancer medications for dogs and cats, people’s beloved pets. It’s really low. Fortunately, employees and management were attentive and contacted the authorities.”

Sanchez is scheduled to be sentenced by County Court Judge Anthony Molé on Jan. 31, 2024. The Dutchess County resident faces a maximum sentence of 2 1/3 to 7 years in state prisonhighlighted NBC News.

In a similar case, a Hispanic veterinarian in Elmsford, NY, lost his license in January after pleading guilty to attempted forgery and two counts of animal cruelty.

In September, Julie DeVuono, a 51-year-old nurse, pleaded guilty to fraud and money laundering for raising $1.5 million by selling fake vaccine cards during the COVID-19 pandemic on Long Island (NY).
