The Hispanic Society Museum & Library (HSM&L) and the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection (CPPC) present the interactive sculpture to the New York public Penetrable (1990) of Jesus Raphael Sototo commemorate the centenary of the birth of the Venezuelan artist.
The work will be installed in the Upper terrace of the HSM&L this summer and marks the first time a Soto sculpture has been displayed outdoors for the public to experience in the Big Apple.
He Penetrableon long-term loan from the CPPC, is installed in the museum, which is defined as the main institution dedicated to the preservation, study, understanding, exhibition and enjoyment of the art and cultures of the Portuguese and Spanish speaking countries and communitieswhich is located in Upper Manhattan, on the west side of Broadway, between 155th and 156th streets.
This collaboration continues the journey of the work, after two decades of loans in prominent institutions in America such as the Museum of Latin American Art in Buenos Aires (2003); the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (2004); the Museum of the Palace of Fine Arts, Mexico City (2006); the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas, Austin (2007); the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2011-2017); and the Olana State Historic Site, Hudson, New York (2017-2018).
Soto, a visionary artist from Venezuela, played a pivotal role in the development of kinetic art in Paris during the 1950s and 1960s, as well as in the movement of the geometric abstraction in his native country. His work is characterized by its connection with the landscape, perception and interactivity with viewersresulting in immersive experiences that blur the boundaries between art and its audience.
The HSM&L reopened its main building and upper terrace on May 25, 2023. With greater accessibility and better facilities, the museum’s current exhibition in the Main Courtyard focuses on commemorating the centennials of Joaquin Sorolla (1863-1923) y Jesus Raphael Soto (1923-2005), as well as the premiere of two new exhibitions: Jewels in a Gem: Luz Camino at the Hispanic Society at the Galería Visión de España and In Search of Juan Pareja: from Arturo Schomburg to Jas Knight at the Galería de Project.
Additional support for installation Penetrable (1990) was provided by GRoW @ Annenberg and Perrotin.
