NEW YORK – A Hispanic man in New York City was sentenced to six months behind bars for secretly using a cell phone to record women using a public bathroom at the LaGuardia airport, where he was employed.
Samuel Rodriguez, 39, pleaded guilty and was sentenced in a Queens court, announced Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz. After serving the sentence, Rodríguez will have ten years of supervision and must register as a sex offender.
“In pleading guilty, this defendant admitted to taking advantage of unwitting people by setting his phone to record women using the bathroom. He turned an airport bathroom into his own personal show. This is inconceivable and as a result of his actions the defendant is going to go to jail, ”Katz said.
Rodriguez, a College Point resident, pleaded guilty in September to the second-degree unlawful surveillance charge.
According to the charges, shortly before 9:00 p.m. on December 19, 2018, a woman entered a unisex, single-compartment bathroom just after the defendant had left. Moments later, the woman heard a beep. He walked towards the sound and saw a cell phone actively recording inside the paper towel dispenser.
The prosecutor said the victim examined the phone and played an earlier clip that captured images of the defendant placing the phone inside the paper towel dispenser and angled the device to capture anyone using the toilet in front of the dispenser.
According to the report, when the police approached Rodríguez, he responded by saying “I know what this is about and I’m sorry” and explained that he went to the bathroom and put his phone there because, “I was trying to film beautiful girls. to touch my private parts at home. “
The investigation was carried out by the Police Department of the Port Authority.
