Ceferino Sánchez was indicted Tuesday on murder charges in the death of his newborn baby, in Lower Manhattan in April.

Baby Cairo Sánchez Dixon, 3 months old, died of a abusive Head Trauma, according to the criminal complaint. He suffered a complex set of skull fractures, hemorrhage bilateral optic nerve root and bilateral subdermal hematomas.

The 34-year-old father was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter and reckless assault on a child, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said. “It is heartbreaking to learn that Cairo Dixon-Sanchez, a vulnerable baby, suffered this unimaginable abuse,” said the prosecutor, quoted by Pix11.

Sánchez took the baby to New York University Hospital on April 25.. She allegedly said that she had dropped it the night before while she was feeding him at her apartment in Vladeck Houses (NYCHA) on Madison St., in the Lower East Side. However, doctors reported to police that the baby had a skull fracture and that the injury was consistent with an assault.

Sánchez was involved in another infant death in 2006 in Hudson County, New Jersey, where he was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and later was acquittedpolice sources said. The victim in that incident was a 33-day-old baby who sustained blunt force trauma to the head. The link between him and that infant is unclear.

In a similar case, in March Christian Rodríguez was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to fatally throwing his newborn son to the ground in The Bronx (NYC).

That month there were two other similar fatalities in New York: A mother and her boyfriend were charged in the death of an autistic child maltreated and malnourished 8-year-old boy, weighing just 30 pounds (13.6 kilos), in the Bronx. Y Hispanic woman pleaded guilty to starving her stepson 7 years old on Long Island.

Last year it was also reported several cases of children killed by alleged domestic violence in New York. If you are a victim or suspect that someone is being mistreated, especially if they are a minor or elderly:
