The incident that triggered tensions, as reported ReutersFriday (8/11/2024), when French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot planned to visit the Pater Noster Church complex on the Mount of Olives, East Jerusalem.
The site is one of four holy sites in Jerusalem under the supervision of France, which are under the responsibility of the Paris authorities and which are considered part of French jurisdiction.

French diplomatic sources said Israeli security forces had been told not to enter ahead of Foreign Minister Barrot’s visit.
However, Israeli security forces personnel continued to do so and as a result, Foreign Minister Barrot refused to enter the compound – known as Eleona in French – while security personnel Inner Tel Aviv.
The situation escalated, and according to these sources, two French security officers were briefly arrested by Israeli authorities.
French diplomatic sources said Israeli security officials knew the two arrested officers came from the consulate and had diplomatic status.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry, in its statement, said that an altercation took place between Israeli security forces and two French security guards in Jerusalem. The two French security guards, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said, were released only after declaring themselves diplomats.
