His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan Visits the Liwa Dates Festival and Auction in Abu Dhabi

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Al Dhafra Region, visited the activities of the second session of the Liwa Dates Festival and Auction, held under the patronage of His Highness and organized by the Committee for Managing Cultural and Heritage Festivals and Programs in Abu Dhabi, in cooperation with the Emirates Heritage Club.

The festival is held in the city of Liwa in the Al Dhafra region, and its activities continue until September 30.

His Highness began the visit by inspecting the date auction, which is held daily throughout the festival, and aims to highlight Emirati dates and their quality to all visitors interested in purchasing the finest and most luxurious types of dates.

His Highness inspected a number of participating pavilions and government and private entities displaying the latest developments and modern technologies used in palm cultivation and the date industry. He listened to an explanation about heritage events and competitions for farmers and date producers, and learned about a number of competitions included in the festival.

His Highness visited the pavilion of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, which is the guest of honor at the Liwa Dates Festival, where its participation is a qualitative addition to the festival and an occasion to strengthen relations between farmers in the Emirates and Jordan in the field of dates and related industries.

His Highness also viewed a group of heritage activities accompanying and designated for visitors in the events and competitions arena, such as date decorating and packaging, the international olive oil competition, the honey village, the cooking competition and the heritage village, in addition to the section on photography and drawing within the categories of palm trees and dates and wildlife and marine life in the area. During the tour, His Highness met with a number of participants and listened to their opinions, as they confirmed their interest and eagerness to participate in the second session of the Liwa Dates Festival and Auction.

At the conclusion of the visit, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan praised the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, may God protect him, and His Highness’s unlimited support for heritage festivals, which strengthened their position until they became one of the most important events concerned with preserving the heritage of the UAE. And raising community awareness of the value of the Emirati cultural heritage.

His Highness pointed out that the festival and auction, with its local, regional and international participation, contribute to the exchange of knowledge between Emirati farmers and their participating counterparts from sisterly and friendly countries, and internationally promote Emirati products and support local industries and small business owners.

His Highness praised the festival’s activities and competitions, which showcase distinctive Emirati products, especially industries related to the palm tree and dates, and introduce their importance and present them to the public in the most beautiful way.

His Highness said, “The continued success achieved by heritage festivals confirms the validity of the approach followed by the late father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God have mercy on him, in spreading greenery and growth throughout the country and in caring for the palm tree, the symbol of life and giving.”

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan appreciated the efforts made by the Cultural and Heritage Festivals and Programs Management Committee in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in organizing the festival, and the active participation of all governmental, official and private institutions and agencies and all sponsors and supporters of the festival in its second session, and the major role they play in service of the heritage preservation strategy.
