Aldo Campeol passed away on Saturday at the age of 93. The name of that Italian chef may not mean much to you, but the world famous dessert that was invented by luck and served for the first time in his restaurant in Treviso is undoubtedly: the tiramisu.

The ‘father of the tiramisu’. Aldo Campeol has had that nickname since he first put that dessert on his menu in 1972 at his restaurant Le Beccherie in Treviso. That was the result of a mistake: his chef Roberto Linguanotto was making vanilla ice cream, but accidentally dropped a spoonful of mascarpone into a bowl that already had eggs and sugar in it. The combination was so delicious that the cook, Campeol, and his wife Alba added ladyfingers dipped in coffee and sprinkled some cocoa powder over them. The resulting dessert is immensely popular worldwide.

Its name, tiramisu, literally means ‘pull me up’. But more important is the figurative meaning: ‘uplift me’ or ‘make me happy’, just what a nice dessert does.

They never patented it, and several chefs have claimed in recent decades that they invented the tiramisu. But in the gastronomic world, there is no doubt about it: Campeol is the ‘father of tiramisu’. Aldo Campeol was 93 years old.
