FAJAR.CO.ID — A criminal investigative journalist from the Netherlands has been targeted for murder. The police managed to arrest three suspects. One person was acquitted because he was found not guilty.
It was Peter R. de Vries, the journalist’s name. Now he is struggling between life and death. His condition is critical after being shot five times on Tuesday (6/7/2021).
The BBC said the incident occurred at 19.30 local time. He had just left the TV studio where he worked at Lange Leidsedwarsstraat, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. That’s when the 64-year-old journalist was shot at close range. One of the shots pierced his head.
“It was a cruel and heartless attack,” said Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema, Wednesday (7/7).
He called De Vries a national hero as well as a brave journalist who tirelessly seeks justice. European Council President Charles Michel also called the attack a crime against journalism.
Only a few hours after the incident, the police managed to apprehend the perpetrator. Namely, a 35-year-old man of Polish nationality living in Maurik and a 21-year-old man living in Rotterdam. They were arrested in Leidschendam. The police got help from witnesses and CCTV videos. They asked that videos of the attacks not be uploaded to social media, but some did not comply. YouTube has removed hundreds of videos containing attacks on De Vries.
