Hiroki Tsunoda’s speed is not appreciated enough. Pierre Gasly, his teammate at AlphaTauri, says so. Speaking on the F1 podcast Beyond The Grid, Pierre Gasly said there was one driver who didn’t get the recognition he deserved. And that driver is his old teammate.
Gasly, now 27 and with a wealth of experience in the sport, wanted to highlight how fast AlphaTauri’s Japanese driver Hiroki Tsunoda is. Hiroki Tsunoda is often underrated and forgotten, mainly due to his teammates. Even now, Daniel Ricciardo, who parachuted into the team following the early departure of Nyk de Vries, is seen as a more likely candidate to replace Perez than the Japanese driver. Gasly wants people to understand that 23-year-old Hiroki Tsunoda is in F1 for a reason. Pierre Gasly moved to the Alpine F1 team this year and has Esteban Ocon as his new teammate. Ocon and Gasly, who are both from France and were born in 1996, have been rivals since their karting days, and it was well known in the F1 paddock that they had a bad relationship. Regarding Ocon, he commented, “I can’t say we’re friends. We don’t spend much time together.” “But once we get on the track, we’re at work. We’re mature, we’re responsible, we’re delivering. We’ve had pretty similar feedback and we’ve gotten pretty much the same things out of that car. “I’m very demanding and I think about how I want the team to develop.” “In terms of our working relationship, we have a very formal relationship, but at the end of the day, I “I just want to be competitive, so that’s all I’m asking for. I know Esteban won’t invite me to dinner, but I think that’s fine.” “It’s completely different from when I was with Yuki.” says Guthrie. Before the Italian Grand Prix, he invited Yuki Tsunoda to dinner at his home. “Yuki was very unique, and I talked to Sir Jackie Stewart in Austin. Hearing about his relationship with Francois Cevert was very inspiring. I felt like I could relate to Takeshi’s relationship, his journey to F1 and how I was trying to support and help him. It was a very genuine, healthy relationship.” The first thing I want to say is that even though I had some kind of friendship with Yuki, it doesn’t take anything away from the talent or speed that he had.”I always say, I don’t think Yuki gets enough credit or recognition for his speed. He can be very fast if he controls his emotions and words. People underestimate what he has. “But even though we had fun and had a really good relationship in practice, qualifying, and the race, I wanted to destroy him. Not in a bad way, but in every session I wanted to destroy him. The desire to be the best, the challenge, the competition always takes precedence over everything else. “I don’t lose respect or push myself beyond my limits. I always play within the rules. But… At the end of the day, what makes me happy when I go home on Sunday is feeling like I did the best I could with the car I was given. That’s the ultimate goal. “I’m laughing in the paddock, laughing off the track. Laughing, going out to a nice dinner. We can have a laugh outside the track, and we can go out for a nice dinner. We spend a lot of time away from home, so it’s important to find moments to enjoy when we’re not racing. “Of course, my favorite moment is when I get in the car and compete against 19 of the best drivers in the world. I want to beat them and get every hundredth, thousandth minute I can find in the car. This exercise of pursuing the number one gives me absolute satisfaction.”But it would be great if I could have more fun with my teammates, like I did with Yuki when I jumped out of the car. If you don’t, that’s okay, you’ll find another way to enjoy riding with your team, mechanics and engineers.
