Hinzpeter International Reporting Award 3rd Ceremony at National Assembly Library in Seoul

In memory of the late journalist Jürgen Hinzpeter, who brought the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Uprising to the attention of the world, the 3rd Hinzpeter International Reporting Award, awarded to outstanding video reporters around the world, will be held today (8th) at the National Assembly Library in Seoul.

At the awards ceremony, the Korean Film Journalists Association and the May 18 Memorial Foundation will award the grand prize (World at a Crossroads Award) to the reporting team for ‘Inside Russia: Putin’s Domestic War’, which covered the situation inside Russia after the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Four video reporters, including Vasily Kolotilov, living in the UK and Russia, took the risk of the ‘Fake News Punishment Act’ signed by President Putin and reported on the massive suppression of the press and destruction of democracy occurring in Russia after the war.

The news category award goes to the reporting team for the ‘Battle of Bakhmut’, which recorded the horrors of the war while staying in the southeastern region of Bakhmut, the front line of the Russian-Ukrainian war, in August last year.

In the special category, the ‘Russia’s Soft Power in the Central African Republic’ reporting team, which reported on Russia’s continued human rights oppression in the Central African Republic under the leadership of the private military company ‘Wagner Group’, will be awarded.

The ‘May Gwangju Award (Award for Achievement)’, a non-competitive category, will be awarded to four video reporters who took the risk of being exposed to radiation during the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion in 1986 and recorded the scene.

Kim Kwang-jin, Deputy Mayor for Economy and Culture, and German Ambassador to Korea Georg Schmidt will attend this award ceremony on behalf of Gwangju Metropolitan City, which sponsors the Hinzpeter International Reporting Award, and Ukrainian Ambassador to Korea Dmitry Ponomarenko will accept the ‘May Gwangju Award’ on his behalf.
