Dozens of others were injured, some seriously.
The ritual is actually dedicated to the Hindu Goddess. Pilgrims flock to the temple en masse as the clock strikes midnight.

The scene turned into chaos after the two groups of pilgrims waiting their turn at the temple started arguing with each other.
“The incident occurred at around 2:45 a.m., and as per initial reports, an altercation occurred which resulted in people pushing each other, followed by a stampede,” Police Chief Dilbagh Singh told the news agency. YEARS.
A large-scale rescue effort was launched after the incident. About two dozen people were injured in this tragedy and taken to various hospitals in the nearby area.
The pilgrimage was briefly suspended, but resumed soon after.
Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. He ordered the distribution of medical aid and other assistance to those injured.
“Deeply saddened by the loss of life due to the trampling in Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan. Condolences to the bereaved family. Wishing the injured a speedy recovery,” he continued on Twitter.
