Hind Rostom: The Marilyn Monroe of the East, Who Defied Stereotypes

Hind Rostom loved the title “Marilyn Monroe of the East”, although she did not look like her

Basant Reda, the only daughter of the late Egyptian artist Hind Rostom, confirmed that the embodiment of her mother’s biography in a dramatic work is unacceptable, and there is absolutely no room for discussion about it. She decided the matter in her life; Where she always said: “What is remarkable about my career that it is narrated in a work of art?”

In the beginning, Basant Rida spoke on the 12th anniversary of her mother’s death, which coincided with August 8, 2011, about Hind’s strict upbringing, and her stay after her parents’ separation in her paternal grandmother’s house; Where the family of Turkish origin imposed many prohibitions and objections because of her father’s police work. Bassant denied that Hind Rostom had rebelled against her family life by entering art: “She is a beautiful and different woman, with many advantages that qualified her to present many diverse roles.”

According to Basant, her mother rejected the title of “Queen of Seduction”; Because he used to put her in one artistic category, despite her ability to present a variety of roles, so that she was wondering: “Why do they call the artist Faten Hamama the title (Lady of the Arab Screen)?” And was this title a transit visa for presenting all roles, and we are limiting our capabilities in one template?

She pointed out that she liked the title “Marilyn Monroe of the East”, although she did not look like her: “My mother is more like Rita Hayworth.”

Bassant points out that «these titles were given to her by the journalist Moufid Fawzi, and they caused a dispute between Hind Rostom and Faten Hamama at the time. And (Shafiqa Al-Qibtiya), her physical composition and features ably qualified her for those roles,” noting that the late artist “expressed her anger at the titles before publicly.”

Bassant explained that her mother, who passed away at the age of 82, “regretted a lot for not presenting television works, as she wished to remain her mark on people, and to enter their homes, unlike the theater that she refused because of the large time that it requires daily, as my mother was (petite). She finishes her work and returns home immediately, and she did not even have close friends in the artistic community.

Rejection of the “School of Hooligans”

Bassant added that her mother refused to present the character “Effat”, which was embodied by the late actress Suhair Al-Bably in the play “School of the Rioters”, adding: “She refused it categorically, because of the presence of famous comedians who feared her presence next to them, along with her rejection of the series (Shalash Family), as well as films.” (My father is above the tree), (an unknown woman), (black glasses), and (the peacock).

The daughter of the late artist confirmed that the movie “Toha” was behind her mother’s disagreement with the late artist, Tahia Carioca: “Carioca was distinguished by popular roles at this stage, and she felt at that time that Hind had become a competitor to her, and invaded her region. But the directors had a different opinion, as the actor can present all the roles, so my mother agreed to the offer made to her, as she is not the producer; Rather, she is an actress who is good at presenting all characters.

Hind Rostom played simple roles in her artistic beginnings. However, director Hassan Reda (Basant’s father) presented her in a movie starring her, after which director Hassan Al-Imam adopted her, and according to Basant, she “was always saying that he was the professor from whom I learned everything.”

Despite her remarkable appearance in many roles, Hind Rostom was not good at belly dancing, and refused to present dancing tableaus: “She was dancing with the help of coach Ali Reda, who was standing in front of her to imitate his movements.”

Regarding Hind Rostom’s relationship with the artist Farid Shawky, Bassant said: “They presented together (duet) artistically in many works, and there was a family relationship between them, and she was at the height of her happiness after the legal amendments made by the movie (Word of Honor), in which they participated together.”

Hind Rostom was satisfied with her private life after her retirement from art, and she categorically refused to appear in the media. Bassant says: “She was offered to appear on a program with the artist Safaa Abu Al-Saud, and she refused. Appearing with me, but she refused, and said at the time: If I thought of appearing, it would be for Egyptian television, and indeed it was her last media appearance with the journalist Mahmoud Saad before her departure.

Find stability

Basant mentioned the reason for her mother’s refusal to marry the artist Rushdi Abaza, saying: “My mother wanted stability, while Abaza was known for family instability at the time; But she felt settled with Dr. Muhammad Fayyad (obstetrician-gynecologist) for more than 50 years, after she met him by chance at his clinic.

The late artist, Hind Rostom, was afraid of cancer like her mother, and she had an obsession with disease and death. He was a doctor at the beginning of his life, and she is a well-known star. But she felt that he was the man with whom she wanted to complete her life, and she always said: “I am Madame Doctor Fayyad.” He deserved it because he was the source of her happiness. According to her daughter Basant.

Basant Reda explained that her mother’s marriage to Dr. Fayyad was not an obstacle to completing her artistic career. After her marriage to him in 1960, she presented her strongest work, before retiring from art in 1978.

Reasons for retirement

About Hind Rostam’s retirement from art, Bassant said: “The irony in my mother’s life is that she started her artistic life early, at the age of 15, with passion, despite her father’s family’s opposition and boycott of her and their disavowal of her, unlike her mother’s family, and she retired from art early at the end of the seventies of the last century without Regret, until the last day of her life.”

Basant Reda attributed the reason for her mother’s retirement to “the low level of cinema at that time, the general atmosphere at that stage being different, the lack of punctuality, the deterioration of studios, and the tendency to rent houses for filming, and this did not appeal to her; As she felt that this was not appropriate for her after a long history, so she made her decision irrevocably, despite the temptations, and retired at the height of her artistic glory.

Journalist Maryam al-Sharif, author of the book “I am Madame Dr. Fayyad… Hind Rustom,” said that the reason for naming the book by this name is that it is the title preferred by the artist, Hind Rostom, adding: “Dr. Fayyad used to make her feel stable and calm, away from the pressures of work.” And the noise of stardom.” Mariam Al-Sharif explained, “Hind Rostom was a shy girl when she was young, and she did not like to remember her childhood because of the separation of her parents.”

Mariam Al-Sharif added to Asharq Al-Awsat: “There are many personalities who influenced her career, and contributed to giving her the opportunity to be a screen star in addition to her talent and beauty, including the great director Hassan Al-Imam, who presented her with a number of important artworks in her great artistic career.” Until a dispute occurred between them and a boycott, and then it was reconciled by the artist, Mahmoud Al-Meligy.
