Damon Hill says the racing gods are completely behind this season Max Verstappen. The former Formula 1 world champion states that Verstappen is very lucky this year and is therefore convinced that he will take the world championship.
Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have been very evenly matched this season. With seven races to go, Hamilton is only two points ahead of Verstappen. It therefore seems that it will remain very exciting until the last race. Verstappen has been through the eye of the needle in the past two races on two circuits widely known as ‘Mercedes-jobs.’ According to Hill, it is therefore crystal clear that the racing gods are on Verstappen’s side.

“You can understand why people in ancient times believed that there were gods who lend a hand to certain factions in battle,” Hill tells the story. F1 Nation-podcast. “I mean, he’s definitely been lucky in the last few races. I know Monza was something controversial, but the net result is that one race went by where he should have lost points to Lewis and it didn’t. And then you have this one race. He should have lost a lot here too, but he didn’t.”
Mercedes misses opportunities
“So Christian Horner said it felt like a win for them and I think they’re really relieved,” Hill continues. It was then noted that the luck a particular driver receives during a season is often balanced. This was the case in Baku, for example, when Verstappen saw his victory go up in smoke when he suffered a blowout. Hill notes, however, that Hamilton is missing a lot of opportunities, where he could have taken advantage of his rival’s misfortune.

“Yes, it was bad luck,” emphasizes the 1996 world champion. “But it was also a blunder by Lewis or Mercedes, who did not benefit from that mistake. When you look back on the season, you have to see where it points,” says he. “It proves that luck is more on Max’s side than Lewis’s, I think. These things could of course change, but I think we’ll see.”
