Host Jimmy Kimmel gave the stars in the audience at the Oscars, including Robert Downey Jr. and Emma Stone, stitches. Donald Trump also had to pay the price, and he had sought it himself.
The Oscars were very predictable: the favorites won their prize without exception. But besides the makers, who really cares who wins? For mere mortals, the Oscars rely on the dresses, the acts, and its humor.
You can leave the latter to host Jimmy Kimmel. He is now the longest-serving talk show host in the US (since 2003) and has presented the Oscars for the fourth time. He is an insider, usually keeps it relaxed, and at most a little risqué.
The audience in front of him usually takes itself quite seriously, so Kimmel regularly put himself down, starting with a tricked-out dialogue with Barbie. He then looked for victims in the room who could take a beating: Robert Downey Jr. had “been high so many times that his nomination couldn’t even be a highlight.” Emma Stone later appeared to call Kimmel a “prick” after he reduced Poor Things to a sex film… Comedy is a tough trick, but Kimmel at least kept the momentum going.
To keep things cozy, he did not refer too often to the harsh reality outside the film world. Until it turned out that Donald Trump already called him the worst host ever online during the show. Kimmel read Trump’s post live and then wondered if they didn’t have a curfew in prison?
After years of crisis, in which the Academy was accused of discrimination (#Oscarssowhite), the Oscar for best picture was first wrongly awarded to La la land instead of Moonlight and Will Smith felt it necessary to deliver a famous blow, this was a smooth, good edition. Kimmel enjoyed his routine cool, the acts dazzled and most stars kept their hands to themselves and their acceptance speeches short.
After the cinema itself – it was a grand cru film year – the Oscars also seemed to be back where they once were: still incestuous but once again dazzling and entertaining. Thanks to a dazzling version of ‘I’m just Ken’, not Barbie but Trump became the only loser of the evening.
