Hikers with a day delay started the 104th Nijmegen Four Days Marches | NOW

The participants in the Nijmegen Four Days Marches officially started the 104th edition of the walking event on Wednesday. The opening day Tuesday was canceled due to the extreme heat.

March leader Henny Sackers gave the traditional starting signal at 04:00. Immediately after the start, the Four Days Marches runners were waved goodbye by hundreds of partygoers, who come to the city for the Four Days Marches. The participants walk in the direction of Wijchen and return to Nijmegen via the city center.

The Day of Wijchen caused the most dropouts in other years, but “everything is different now”, according to a spokesman for the Red Cross. “This is now the first day of walking. In other years, hikers who have already made it through the first day with difficulty drop out on the second day. Given the weather forecast, we are taking into account many treatments along the way.”

The opening day was canceled on Tuesday, because it was irresponsible to walk with temperatures approaching 40 degrees. That is why the Four Days Marches lasts only three days this year.

It will be about ten degrees less warm on Wednesday, but the tour remains “a challenge” according to the weather advice team of the Four Days Marches. This is also because the humidity is higher.
