In the Limburg municipality of Meerssen, hikers have been attacked by wild boars in recent days. The municipality calls on people to avoid forests in the region for the time being.
Last week, several walkers and their dogs were attacked in the Kalverbosch near the village of Bunde. It is not clear whether there were any injuries. The municipality has cordoned off the area with tape.
Wild boars are naturally shy and prefer to avoid people. However, they can become aggressive if they feel rushed or have young piggies with them, the municipality writes. “We therefore urgently advise you to stay away from nature reserves for the time being and certainly not to walk or cycle in or near a nature reserve after sunset.”
Past incidents
The advice is not to visit the Kalverbosch, Humcoven, Vliek, Waterval, Raar, Geuldal and Curfsgroeve areas with dogs for the time being, but you can also encounter wandering boars in other nature areas. Those who still want to walk or cycle in the designated areas are asked to stay on the paths and to keep dogs on a short leash.
The municipality has asked the Fauna Management Unit and Game Management Unit to monitor the situation. In addition, Meerssen is investigating with these organizations whether additional measures can be taken, reports 1Limburg.
In the vicinity of Meerssen it is more common that there are problems with aggressive wild boars. In May, for example, a dog was attacked by a boar near Geulle. Several hikers were also attacked last January. Even then, the municipality advised to avoid the woods. Warning signs were placed to alert passers-by to the presence of the wild boars.
