Hiker Discovers Remains of Beloved Dogs Buried in Forest

Helma (65) from Uden buried her two dogs Mika and Bowie in a forest near Mill. In the forest where the ashes of her deceased husband are also scattered. But the dogs were not buried deep enough, so a hiker found the remains of the dogs in the woods on Tuesday. “The intention was a loving funeral.”

Before she went on vacation, she had her two dogs put to sleep at a vet. The white bitch Mika was 15 years old and demented. “Bowie’s heart was considerably enlarged and that put pressure on his airways,” says Helma. The vet also found bladder stones. “It was no longer possible to operate on him.”

“It was not possible to dig deeper than 30 centimeters.”

She wanted to bury the dogs in the piece of forest where her husband always liked to visit. “We lived together in Mill until my husband Jan passed away 13 years ago,” she says. “Jan really liked to cross in the area. When Jan passed away, I scattered his ashes in the woods.”

And there in that forest she also wanted to bury Mika and Bowie. Some friends helped her. “But we were unable to dig deeper than 30 centimetres. It was very difficult to get through the tree roots,” says Helma. “All my vacation I was afraid that wild animals would dig them up. Yes, that did happen.”

“It was well-intentioned.”

Helma had just returned from vacation when she heard that her newly buried dogs had been discovered. She was shocked by the news of the lurid find in the woods near Mill. “I immediately called the animal ambulance,” she says.

The Animal Ambulance Brabant North-East had taken the remains of Mika and Bowie. “On Thursday morning we received a phone call,” says Nathalie Halbe of Dierenambulance. “Helma was extremely shocked by all the news.”

Fortunately, the animal ambulance could still do something for her. “We have done everything we can to still have the dogs cremated,” Nathalie continues.

Helma now wants nothing more than to scatter the ashes of the deceased dogs somewhere in the woods near Mill. She says about the burial: “It was well-intentioned. I should have handled it differently.”
