Jakarta: The latest data from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) (2021) states that around 19.46 million people in Indonesia have diabetes diabetes. There was an increase of 81.8 percent compared to the number in 2019.
This figure positions Indonesia as the country with the fifth highest number of people with diabetes in the world, after China, India, Pakistan and the United States. In fact, Indonesia is the only one in southeast Asia which is included in the top 10 countries with the most cases.
The number of people with diabetes is predicted to reach 13.7 million people in 2030 and will continue to increase every year. Busy life makes many people rarely exercise, sleep deprived, and rely on processed foods.
Recent research from the University of Turku, Finland, revealed that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) improved muscle glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetes. After participants followed HIIT training for 2 weeks, glucose uptake in their thigh muscles returned to normal levels.
Therefore, HIIT exercise is a good choice for treating and preventing diabetes, when compared to regular exercise which requires more time but lower intensity.
According to dr.Umar Nur Rachman Sp.PD, Internal Medicine Specialist, high-intensity exercise can be an effective way to prevent diabetes. Diabetes is caused by a buildup of sugar in the blood and metabolic disorders.
“Therefore, exercise that involves the whole body can burn calories faster and reduce fat levels if done regularly,” said dr. Umar in Media Interview, on Tuesday, November 16, 2021.
“Of course, consistency in doing this exercise is important so that muscles can be strengthened in the long term, but the main goal is to lose excess weight by being more active and choosing healthier foods,” added dr. Omar.
One of the HIIT sports that can be done is STRONG Nation. This sport is an effective high-intensity exercise, in addition to losing weight, it is also beneficial for heart health and blood pressure, and can increase the body’s metabolism.
STRONG Nation is inspired by martial arts, HIIT, sports and functional training to maximize every move to burn more calories and increase muscle mass.
