Higinio Martinez blames officials for flooding in Chalco

Mexico City. After registering as a senator for the next six years, Morena member Higinio Martínez warned that in the flooding that various neighborhoods in the municipality of Chalco have been suffering for 20 days “there are responsibilities of municipal, state and federal officials, past and present.”

He added that “it is not a matter of turning around and returning to Toluca or Mexico City,” but rather staying on site to resolve such a delicate problem.

The Morena legislator, who won the Senate seat for the state of Mexico on June 2 and thus his reelection, considered that this emergency must be addressed urgently. “I would suggest that several officials be permanently there, that they live 24 hours a day in Chalco.”

He insisted that “it is not a matter of going around and returning to Toluca or Mexico City, it is a matter of being there permanently, not only to express solidarity with the people, but also to let the people see that the officials live day, afternoon and night what they are living.”

Her statement was made yesterday, after the governor of the State of Mexico, Delfina Gómez, went last Tuesday to the disaster area in Chalco, a municipality that has been under sewage for 20 days.

The Morena senator explained that the flooding that is taking place in Chalco “is a very delicate problem” derived from many factors, including hydraulic works that have been postponed, lack of dredging and maintenance, among others.

He stressed that it is not only a problem for the municipality of Chalco, but a regional one for several years when the Compañía River was being discussed. The State Water Commission of the State of Mexico, he added, must explain why a collector that was started years ago was not completed. It is not a budget issue, he insisted.

“I am not going to blame the past, but obviously there are several factors there that are contributing to people being in a difficult situation, and the Federal Government and the State Government recognize this.” He also expressed that he hopes that “the waters will subside a little, to give those affected a break.”

However, he noted that once the problem is resolved and the crisis in Chalco is over, it is necessary to review where there is municipal, state or federal responsibility.

The train being built in Chalco should also be reviewed, as this work “could cause long-term damage” and flooding will continue to occur.

Senator Martínez went yesterday to the Reforma headquarters in Insurgentes to process his credentials as senator for the period 2024-2030, “thanks to the 4.5 million people from the State of Mexico who voted for the ticket that I headed together with my colleague Mariela Gutiérrez.”

She said she has the opportunity to continue for another six years in the Senate and for the good of Mexico and her state, “I hope that Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum and Professor Delfina Gómez work hard to bring transformation to 18 million Mexicans.”
