The 43rd edition of the Dutch Film Festival started on Friday evening in the Utrecht Stadsschouwburg. The festival kicked off with the film Sweet Dreams by director Ena Sendijarević. This is also the Dutch entry for the Oscars.
The cast of course appeared on the red carpet in Utrecht Sweet Dreams, with Renée Soutendijk, Lisa Zweerman, Florian Myjer and Hans Dagelet, among others. The film is about the Dutch sugar manufacturer Jan who suddenly falls dead on a remote Indonesian island in the aftermath of the colonial era. Sweet Dreams takes a modern look at what the Netherlands has done in Indonesia.
The mayor of Utrecht, Sharon Dijksma, was also present. Outgoing State Secretary for Culture and Media Gunay Uslu and outgoing Minister of Education, Culture and Science Robbert Dijkgraaf were also present.
The NFF lasts until September 29. Until then, 82 premieres will take place in Utrecht.
First Dutch-language vampire film
Another notable title premiering this weekend is We are animals, the first Dutch-language vampire film. The film by director Thijs Bouman and screenwriter Dajo Leunge is about two twentysomethings who meet each other in the Amsterdam nightlife. They fall in love, until nurse Bram discovers that his new friend is a vampire.
The public can purchase tickets for many of the screenings. On the last day, the Golden Calves, the most important Dutch film prizes, are awarded.
