ANPThe six party leaders in the studio of the NOS Jeugdjournaal

What would you do if you had 1 million euros? What is your greatest fear? Do you have an idea how we can stop the war between Israel and Gaza? These were not cautious questions that the party leaders asked in the special Election Broadcast NOS Youth News were presented. And a number of politicians also showed a different side.
Dilan Yesilgöz (VVD), Frans Timmermans (PvdA/GroenLinks), Geert Wilders (PVV), Rob Jetten (D66), Caroline van der Plas (BBB) and Henri Bontenbal (CDA) were invited to the special broadcast. “Because they have a lot of seats or are expected to get a lot of them,” he said. Notably absent was NSC leader Pieter Omtzigt: he could not be there.
Geert Wilders, the party leader who appears to be best known among children, was the only one of the six who had previously attended an election broadcast. He called it “one of the best things about the campaign.” “You do things that you wouldn’t normally do, so I’m curious to see what it will be like today,” he said.

Look back: the special Youth News election broadcast
All party leaders had to introduce themselves and once they had done so, they had to throw a multi-colored ball to the next person. Not entirely coincidentally, it was Henri Bontenbal’s turn first: he said that he really enjoyed making music (he plays the piano, organ and a little saxophone).
Each party leader was given time to promote their own party with a so-called “sales pitch”, but there was also time to answer personal questions. For example, we now know that if Bontenbal had 1 million euros, he would invest money in a company that works with sustainable energy. He wouldn’t work less because he enjoys working too much.
Timmermans was asked what his greatest fear is. He didn’t have to think about it for long: “That something will happen to your children or grandchildren.” And how does Yesilgöz deal with it when she makes a blunder? “I can laugh the hardest at myself, maybe you’ll see that soon!”
Ronaldo’s cry
Rob Jetten had to explain why he thinks it is so important that everyone can be themselves. He said that it was difficult for him to be himself at school because of his orientation. “I was very ashamed of that and I didn’t dare to talk about it because I was afraid of being bullied.” That is why it is important to discuss it if you are being bullied, Jetten emphasized.
There was also time for a quiz, for which the party leaders had to form two teams. After a short hesitation, they became a team with Timmermans, Van der Plas and Jetten and one with Bontenbal, Yesilgöz and Wilders. When it subsequently emerged that the first team was called ‘Team Left’, Van der Plas protested, laughing: “Whoa! Stop this show! Just call it team L,” she said. “Just this once, Caroline, that’s possible,” Jetten told her.
The quiz tested how well all party leaders know children. The question of what footballer Cristiano Ronaldo’s shout sounds like after scoring a goal caused a stir. Timmermans managed to somewhat imitate the accompanying movement, but both teams got the sound wrong. Timmermans did get a point for the movement, to the indignation of Yesilgöz.
Withhold a puzzle piece
Finally, there was a final game, for which the two teams had to build a turret as quickly as possible. It was noticeable how much Yesilgöz wanted to win. She even seemed to deliberately withhold a puzzle piece from Team Left. It did produce the result she wanted: the team on the right won. Whether this is a harbinger for the election results remains to be seen after November 22.
