Events for the 74th International Astronautical Congress (IAC-2023) kicked off today, Monday, in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, and will continue from October 2 to 6.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and International Astronautical Federation (IAF) President Clay Murray jointly attended the opening ceremony of the conference. Murray expressed his gratitude to the Azerbaijani President for his support in organizing this conference and Appreciate the preparations for hosting this meeting.
The conference brought together global players in the space sector, with more than 5,000 participants from 101 countries, including representatives from space agencies, the public sector, the investment community, international private astronomy companies, and more.
At the same time, more than 150 entities participated in the exhibitions organized during the conference and showcased their products in their pavilions.

In his speech at the opening of the conference, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev made a strong reference to the latest developments in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. “The experience of restoring territorial integrity is a unique and irreplaceable phenomenon. We ended the conflict. Having resolved the conflict, we preserved our dignity and restored international law,” he said.
Regarding the latest developments in the crisis in the region and Baku’s announcement to expand its control over it, Aliyev said: “For 28 years we have shown strong commitment to the negotiation process, but 3 years ago we were forced to exercise our authority under the United Nations system The right to self-defense. Last month we fully restored sovereignty over all of the country’s territory.”
The President of Azerbaijan expressed regret that international organizations “that could have ended the conflict” failed to achieve any results, noting that the four resolutions of the United Nations Security Council demanding the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Armenian troops from the region “remain a piece of paper after 27 years, so we use the blood of martyrs implemented these resolutions.”
Regarding the Astronautical Congress, Aliyev said that Azerbaijan has been a member of the international space club for more than ten years and now has two communication satellites and one satellite that monitors the earth’s surface. He also highlighted Azerbaijan’s continued development in the space sector.

Baku’s hosting of the conference coincides with the 50th anniversary of the International Astronautical Congress, which was first held in Baku in 1973. Although it is a new player in the field, it has made rapid and impressive achievements, especially in the field of satellites.
According to Azerbaijan’s official news agency, the Chinese Astronautical Society was selected as the general sponsor of this conference, and SpaceX, the Turkish Space Agency, the Saudi Space Agency, and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Center also actively participated.
Conference events and symposiums will be held at the Baku Congress Center. This year’s theme is “Global Challenges and Opportunities: Giving Space a Chance.”
