Calle Klingberg interviewed in Expressen’s small studio in Skee before one of the matches in the Strömstad Hockey Classic.

Were there any question marks that were straightened into exclamation points in the Strömstad Hockey Classic? Nix.
Did anyone expect that? I hope not.
Is there still little to think about after Frölunda’s two games? Absolutely – so stay tuned.

I WILL TAKE IT freely out of my head this Sunday, impressions and thoughts, because after two days of hockey, there is of course a lot to take away.

Like for example this:

1. Finally.

It’s something special when a season takes its first staggered steps, all players, all teams, all managers and some supporters are full of optimism, you think you’ve made it, dreaming of a winter of victories. Other supporters are already convinced that everything goes smoothly.

Glass half full and half empty, you know.

Anticipation. A tickling feeling in the stomach. I think we all feel that way. And it is anything but unpleasant. Now it’s up and running, just enjoy.

2. No, no, no.

Conclusions are not drawn after two August games. Not even close. Trends? Yes. Small hints? Mm, okay then. But no more. Those who watched the Strömstad matches and on the basis of these feel that “so-and-so will not do” or “he will have a hard time” – listen to good advice and take a few deep breaths.

You are in too much of a hurry. Capisce?

3. Roger Rönnberg.

You may have read the Saturday column about a more actively coaching Frölunda trainer. Same here, you want to see it repeated, not just happen in a training tournament, but Roger Rönnberg (pictured below) was really clear when he answered my questions. The plan is to act more in the booth, “reward those who do well.” As much as it changed in the chains against Färjestad, I have probably never seen that during a Frölunda match with Rönnberg in the booth. Everything didn’t get better (sorry for Nicklas Lasu’s chain), but that wasn’t really the point in my head, I reacted because it all signaled a kind of “reconsideration” in Frölunda’s coaching staff. Exciting to follow, and who knows – possibly the reasoning has changed also regarding timeouts.

4. Chain reaction.

Malte Strömwall will not be in Frölunda’s team until Gotland at the earliest, against HV71 on Thursday, it is probably the same twelve forwards as in Bohuslän. Interesting to see what conclusions Roger Rönnberg & Co draw from the “the whole ocean storms” coaching against Färjestad. Gustav Rydahl clearly looked better with Max Friberg, that combo will surely get more chances. Jere Innala third link? Linus Öberg? Unclear.

I thought – before the sea started to storm – that Nicklas Lasu with Isac Born and Linus Nässén was a chain that promised very well. I wonder if Rönnberg & Co saw the same thing, if they get the same feeling, when the matches of the tournament went through in peace and quiet. The pre-season is all about testing. It is now time to grope, search, evaluate.

Malte Strömwall is probably also in the coaches’ skulls. Is there a plan where he will go in? Perhaps. But it is like the world at large – changeable.

5. More on G.

Fredrik Sjöström, Frölunda’s sporting director, was clear about two things earlier this week:

a) They want to bring in another forward.
b) There is currently no center on the list of possible players.

What Sjöström, Rönnberg and the others in the sporting management have to think about right now is this: “Do we need a center so much that we have to turn down a good wing forward, should we have a bucket of ice in our stomachs, wait – or is it better to fill in with a good wing forward?”

Here, of course, the market plays a big role, how good are the wings that may be relevant, how likely is it that a good center will appear – and how long will it take? In the best of all worlds, it soon knocks on a good player who works excellently in both forward positions. But that might be hoping a little too much.

6. Surprisingly good.

The quality of Frölunda’s game in the Strömstad Hockey Classic was higher than I expected. Often the players managed to do things at high speed, finding each other both in the build-up phase and in the attacking zone.

To explain my feeling:

It felt much more like September than August. Good sign, of course.

Then there were beauty spots, both against Leksand and Färjestad, Frölunda sometimes felt vulnerable in their own zone, in the shooting sector, the players were a little small, but… who the hell expects perfection in August?

7. Confirmations.

Erik Borg showed that last season was no coincidence. Excellent center play. If I was surprised? Not at all. There was probably no one, the Gothenburger’s game after his arrival in February promised very well, so what we saw in Skee was expected.

Filip Hasa played hockey in a way that showed that his lift at the end of last season meant a lot.

Linus Högberg immediately sent good signals. So smart, so calm, so good with the puck, solves all situations.

Henrik Tömmerne’s breakouts, his passing game… say no more.

What said? If I go against my own rule of not jumping to conclusions in August? Well, okay… a little, but… no, these investigations were more of a confirmation of something I already knew, or at least thought I knew. I noted and nodded.

8. Something to think about.

Isac Heens looked exciting with limited ice time, Frederik Dichow was not at all as fluttery as he has been at times, Jere Innala active with better shots than before, Noah Hasa had several good actions.

Calle Klingberg was relatively invisible, Otto Stenberg probably also wants to be more involved in future matches.

No time to celebrate, no time to saw, just a little to carry with you, keep an eye on in future matches.

9. Tjeck pôjk.

David Tomasek, the Färjestad center, was in my eyes the player who stood out in the Strömstad Hockey Classic. Almost always dangerous when his chain was on the ice, Micke Lindqvist and Jocke Nygård contributed – but it was Tomasek who was the mastermind behind most of it. Same here, no sharp conclusions, I remember how Michael Spacek impressed early on for Frölunda but then didn’t measure up at all. Now I don’t think Tomasek’s SHL career will take the same path, but… sorry, two games is really too little to determine things.

Well, I liked Tomasek.

I liked Tomasek very much.

Tomas Mitell interviewed on Expressen’s TV broadcast.

Nothing Färjestad did made me rethink the fact that, in my eyes, the Karlstad team should go towards a successful season. Tomas Mitell’s squad, together with Rögles and Växjös, feels the strongest on paper.

Frölunda fully matched Färjestad in terms of play. It says something. Later in the autumn we will possibly know more about what.

10. A dear tradition.

How about one like this?

As always a pleasure to come to little Skee and be received by the tournament manager Daniel Olofsson and his staff. So many nice, happy and accommodating people, so much of a feel-good experience.

Hey Lions Hockey! May it go well this winter.

***

Frölunda’s men train Monday–Thursday in Valhallarink, match against HV71 in Jönköping Thursday, Friday–Sunday off. The ladies also train in the Valhalla rink, some poor figure skaters must have had to move.

***

Ipswich are on full points in The Championship after 2-0 at Stoke yesterday and 2-1 up at Sunderland a week ago. You hardly believe it’s true. Applies to take the opportunity to enjoy.

Thanks for reading – have a nice Sunday.
