Highest number of infections in the Netherlands since Christmas: more…

For the first time since December 25, more than 10,000 new corona cases have been identified in the Netherlands in one day. Between Friday morning and Saturday morning, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment received 10,345 reports of positive tests. That is nine times the number last Saturday, when more than 1,100 positive tests were reported.

The 10,345 new cases are more than last Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday combined. Last Saturday there were just over 1,100 positive tests. That means that the daily figure has increased ninefold in a week. This has not happened before during the outbreak in the Netherlands, which now lasts 500 days.

The number of positive tests increases by an average of more than 40 percent per day. That means the record is in sight. On December 20, RIVM reported 12,997 corona cases.

In the past seven days, 31,295 people have tested positive, the highest level since May 20. The week before, the coronavirus was diagnosed in 5144 people. That is an increase of more than 500 percent.

More tests are being performed, but the percentage of positive tests is also increasing. Just over a week ago, 3 percent of all tests performed at the GGDs revealed an infection. That has increased to about 15 percent. That indicates that more people are actually infected.

Deaths

The number of deaths has not yet risen. RIVM received one message last 24 hours that a corona patient had died from the virus. This was a resident of the municipality of Bodegraven-Reeuwijk. The fact that the death was reported now does not mean that this person has died in the past 24 hours. It sometimes takes a while for a death to be registered. Nine deaths have been reported in the past seven days, the lowest level since mid-August, nearly a year ago.

More than 1.7 million people have tested positive since the outbreak began. At current figures, it will take about a week before the limit of 1.8 million confirmed infections is passed. By the end of July, the limit of 2 million cases may be reached. Nearly 18,000 people are certain to have died from the virus. The actual numbers are higher.
