Highest in East Java, 12 Banyuwangi residents killed by dengue hemorrhagic fever

Banyuwangi, East Java – At least 12 residents of Banyuwangi died as a result of the case dengue fever Dengue (DHF). In 2022, DHF cases in this district will increase significantly. In total, 512 cases were recorded, up more than 500% from the previous year maximum case in East Java.

The biggest spike in DHF cases occurred in August 2022. There were 71 cases that month. One cause of the skyrocketing cases of dengue fever is weather conditions and environment.

“In 2022 the weather conditions are somewhat ambiguous. Summer and rain occur almost simultaneously. This triggers a spike in DHF,” said Plt. Banyuwangi Health Service Chief Amir Hidayat on Tuesday (12/20/2022) afternoon.

The rainy season accompanied by drought triggers the rapid reproduction of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Consequently, the cases of mosquito bites are very high. Furthermore, public awareness tends to be lacking in preventing DHF cases. For example, drain or clean water that has the potential to become a mosquito nest.

The high cases of dengue fever in Banyuwangi attacks almost all age groups. In fact, most people infected with DHF are city residents. This is due to the dense residential conditions and minimal watersheds. As a result, there are frequent puddles. This condition is different from village areas where there is a lot of open land.

“If there are no puddles, the mosquitoes’ chances of breeding are low,” she said.

To prevent recurrence of DHF cases, the Mosquito Nest Eradication Movement (PSN) continues to be encouraged. Including encouraging people to adopt a healthy lifestyle. For example, drain, bury and dispose of used items that have the potential to breed mosquitoes.
