A total of 54,740 new infections and 276 deaths were registered in the last 24 hours, according to government figures. The country is about to experience a third wave of the pandemic, which has cost 32,943 of the country’s 83 million inhabitants their lives.
Increased infection rates have again led to stricter restrictions, one month after they were eased at the beginning of March. Large parts of Turkey, including Istanbul and the capital Ankara, are now considered high-risk areas with very widespread infection.
The government has again introduced a curfew on weekends in cities with a lot of infection. This measure will also apply during the fasting month of Ramadan, which begins in mid-April, a measure that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hopes will contribute to reducing infection in time for the tourist season in May.
Turkey has been using the Chinese corona vaccine CoronaVac from Sinovac since mid-January. On Friday, the vaccination started with Pfizer and Biontech’s vaccine.
