An unknown bidder has paid 23 million euros at an auction for a space trip together with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. They will board on July 20 for the maiden voyage in a rocket from Blue Origin, the space company of Bezos, the richest man in the world.
It was possible to bid on the space journey in the past month. About 6000 people from more than 140 countries took part. The highest bid was just under 4 million euros when the closing telephone bidding round started. The bids followed each other in quick succession and after seven minutes the space journey was hammered out for the equivalent of 23 million euros.
Together with his brother
The New Shepard rocket is to reach an altitude of more than 100 kilometers after launch in Texas next month. The occupants are weightless there for a few minutes and see the curvature of the earth. Then the craft sinks back into the atmosphere to land again on Earth.
Bezos made last Monday known that he himself goes into space and that his brother also goes with him. “Ever since I was 5 years old, I’ve dreamed of traveling to space,” he says in a video on Instagram.
