In the third quarter, 70,000 unemployed people were added compared to the previous quarter, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) reports Friday. A greater number of people went looking for work in the past quarter. An unprecedented increase in the number of jobs was also noted in the third quarter.
The number of unemployed was 419,000 in the third quarter, an increase of 70,000 compared to the previous quarter. By contrast, the number of vacancies rose by 16,000, while there was still a decrease of 86,000 in the first half of the year.
The number of jobs grew by 164,000 in the third quarter compared to the previous quarter, when 297,000 jobs were lost. The increase is a record, according to Statistics Netherlands. Although this follows a record decrease in the number of jobs a quarter earlier.
The number of jobs rose especially in the trade, transport and catering sector, which fall into the same category at the statistical office. The number of jobs also increased in healthcare and business services.
The decline in the number of flex workers also continued in the third quarter. The total came to 1.7 million, 274,000 less than in the same quarter a year earlier. The number of people with a permanent contract increased by 148,000 to 5.7 million in that period.
