Higher expectations than ever for people living with HIV

A Cambridge University study gives hope of cure to those infected with HIV. The second person to ever recover from the virus is still negative after two years of monitoring.

Adam Castillejo, 41, completed HIV therapy two and a half years ago. Only now has he chosen to reveal his name, out of a desire to encourage those facing this virus.

Those who conducted the study say that the stem cell implant is the one that brought them to healing. Just like in the situation the first patient cured, his transplant did not require two transplants or radiotherapy. –

The study authors warn about the use of this type of treatment on a large scale. It has a high risk for those infected and is only used as a last resort in treatment.

In 2018, 37.9 million people were living globally with HIV infection.
