Higher Court Ruling Reinstates Black President of Brazilian Football Confederation Amid FIFA Threat

Rio de Janeiro (AFP)

A ruling from a higher court in Brazil led to the reinstatement of the president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, Ednaldo Rodriguez.
The initial ruling issued by Judge Gilmar Mendes suspended a previous decision issued by a lower court last December, and returned Rodriguez, who is considered the first black president in the history of the Brazilian Federation, to his position.
Brazilian football has faced a storm of responses recently against the backdrop of the decline in the performance of the Brazilian national team and the threat of the International Federation (FIFA) to suspend the international activity of the Brazilian national teams unless Rodigich is returned to his position.
“I suspend the effects of the ruling issued by the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro, and order the immediate return to office of the leadership elected by the General Assembly of the Brazilian Football Confederation on March 23, 2022,” the judge’s decision said.
This step was followed by the initial ruling being presented to the 11-member Supreme Court.
A lower court had previously invalidated an agreement between the Brazilian Federation and the Rio Public Prosecutor’s Office, dating back to March 2022, which subsequently allowed Rodriguez to be elected as head of the federation until 2026.
The court considered at that time that the Public Prosecutor’s Office exceeded its authority by concluding the agreement.
The case dates back to 2017, when the Brazilian Federation changed its election laws without consulting representatives of the first division clubs in Brazil, whose voting power was weakened.
Former federation president and election winner Rogerio Caboclo was dismissed from his position in 2021.
Rodriguez replaced him temporarily at that time.
A court in Rio later annulled Caboclo’s election due to a change in rules, and Rodriguez won the alternative vote, which has been the subject of ongoing dispute until now.
The Brazilian Federation received a strongly worded warning from the International Federation and the South American Confederation (Conambiol) in more than one letter, which included a clear threat to suspend Brazil’s international activity in the event of any external interference in the internal affairs of the Brazilian Federation.
