With the May holiday and a long weekend behind us, we feel fitter again. This is much needed in these times of high work pressure, which is caused by the tightness of the labor market. So says Jurriaan Penders, company doctor and director of medical affairs at HumanCapitalCare.
“As Joop Zoetemelk once said: ‘You win the Tour de France in bed'”, says Penders. Absenteeism in the Netherlands is creeping back towards normal, according to the latest figures from health and safety service providers HumanCapitalCare and ArboNed. “Which is not to say that we are healthy again,” he immediately adds.
We are, however, healthier than in recent years, with corona providing a distorted picture. But as the pandemic waned, flu and mental illness took over. Psychological absenteeism is, for example, if you call in sick due to stress.
“Now the extremely high absenteeism seems to have passed the peak across the board,” says Penders. He says we’re back in balance. “Absenteeism is not only related to illness. If you sit on the edge of your bed in the morning with a snot, it is related to more than just that snot if you call in sick.”
According to him, it is not the case that everyone drags themselves from (long) weekend to weekend or from holiday to holiday due to the high work pressure. “High work pressure in itself does not make you ill. But with high work pressure you do notice that you can get back to it after a period of real rest.”
Due to the tightness on the labor market, the workload has increased further. “And do you notice that holidays are more necessary.”
HumanCapitalCare and ArboNed are both part of HumanTotalCare, which has insight into the ups and downs of about one million employees.
