Strong easterly winds will cause a new high water peak on the Markermeer at the beginning of the evening on Monday, the municipality of Hoorn reports. The rising water may be even higher than on Sunday morning, when there was also a peak.
The fire brigade will examine on Monday how pumping can be done in Hoorn, if more water than before seeps through the walls of sandbags and big bags. Rijkswaterstaat will maintain dike surveillance at Marken on Monday evening.
The very high water level of the Markermeer is decreasing, because water from the IJsselmeer can be drained to the Wadden Sea. As long as the water level on the IJsselmeer is lower than that of the Markermeer, water can be discharged from the Markermeer.
On Monday this will increase by a few centimeters per day, because the easterly wind is pushing the water up again. As soon as the wind dies down, the water level will drop faster, the water managers expect.

Discharge sluice opened above Amsterdam
Rijkswaterstaat has also opened the discharge sluice in the Oranjesluis complex above Amsterdam. This allows water from the Markermeer to flow into the North Sea via the North Sea Canal. The level of the North Sea Canal is being closely monitored, the water manager reports.
The Oranjesluis complex remains closed to shipping. The locks and lock gates are part of the flood defense around the Markermeer and must therefore be closed at high tide.
