High Water Measures Taken in Netherlands Due to Intense Storm Surge and Flooding Risk

Measures are being taken in several parts of the country due to high water. The water is not only high in the rivers and in the IJsselmeer area, increased water levels are also expected on the coast. Such a combination does not occur often, says Rijkswaterstaat.

The storm surge barriers Hollandse IJsselkering and the Haringvliet locks will close in South Holland this evening. The Ramspolkering near Kampen will probably also follow.

Furthermore, the Biesbosch is being monitored extra closely. Rijkswaterstaat expects that the Noordwaard, an overflow area for the Merwede specially constructed for that purpose, will fill up there. The only time the Noordwaard flooded was in February 2020.

Extra attention is also paid to, among other things, the situation in the IJssel-Vecht delta and the coast of Flevoland. A number of ferry services to Ameland, Schiermonnikoog and Vlieland will be canceled tomorrow.

Code yellow

After the heavy rain in recent weeks, the rivers, lakes and streams have been quite full for some time. Due to the expected strong winds, Rijkswaterstaat is now also extra alert on the coast. Code yellow will apply in eight provinces tomorrow.

According to Rijkswaterstaat, there is no risk of flooding, because the water boards have already made various preparations in recent days. Water levels have been lowered as much as possible and dams are high.
