Due to the high water level, shipping locks, which involve moving ships between two canal buildings with different water levels, are currently not possible. A closure of the lock complex rarely occurs.

It is still unclear how long the Oranjesluis will remain closed, according to a spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat. “We are currently looking into whether we can grant passage to a number of ships, but that is still unclear. So I can’t promise that yet.”

Due to the high water level, various regions in the Netherlands are experiencing flooding, including North Holland. That is why alarm phase 1 – which means that the situation is being closely monitored – was declared earlier. The high water level has hardly any consequences for Amsterdam.
