A truck that is too high has caused a havoc this morning in the western tube of the Benelux tunnel. The damage to the tunnel is so great that it is completely closed towards the south. Rijkswaterstaat has no idea how long the repair work will take.
“We are still investigating exactly what needs to be done. But it is clear that the damage is considerable. That way, quite a bit of wiring is loose,” says a spokeswoman for Rijkswaterstaat. According to her, it is unknown when the tunnel will be restored and can be opened again.
The first report of the havoc came around 9.30 am, reports RTV Rijnmond. Both the tunnel walls and the ceiling are severely damaged.

The driver was stopped, according to a spokeswoman for the Rotterdam police. According to her, he was unable to continue driving with his truck after he had “smashed the tunnel”. Motorists who got stuck in front of the tunnel were all led away. Traffic can detour via the other tunnel tube of the Benelux tunnel or via the A13, A20 and A16.
