Washington expelled 10 Moscow diplomats suspected of spying and sanctioned 32 people accused of trying to interfere in the presidential election. Joe Biden’s government has also imposed additional sanctions in the form of restrictions on US banks trading in Vladimir Putin’s government bonds.

This is the latest US attack on Russia after the era of Donald Trump, who was considered weak against Putin, ended. The series of sanctions were also imposed when Biden offered a face-to-face meeting with Putin.
US sanctions are also supported by NATO. This week, the group did criticize Russia for its massive mobilization of military forces to Ukraine.
This caused pro-Russian militias to clash with the Ukrainian army, which is trying to become part of a NATO country. Ukraine itself asked for US and allied assistance to increase sanctions on Russia.
The Ministry of Finance of the European Union, Australia, Britain and Canada also sentenced eight individuals and entities to witness to Russia’s occupation of Crimea. The area was originally part of Ukraine but has been occupied by Russia since 2011.
“We call on Russia to immediately stop this destabilizing behavior, and to uphold its international obligations,” said the EU official in Brussels.
Previously, the West was also concerned about the detention of Putin’s critic, Alexei Navalny. He was reportedly poisoned with a weapon often used by Soviet intelligence.
