high temperatures and late frosts hit the fields of the region

From one extreme to the other, October ranges from a week with mild weather and temperatures above 30 degrees to another with late and minimal frosts reaching -2 in the central region.

A similar situation is expected this week. when temperatures pick up, reaching 30 degrees this Wednesday, but cold air entry at the end of the week will leave a steep drop in temperature. Indeed for Friday there are minimum expectations that could drop below 2 degrees.

Meanwhile, the rains will continue to be absent in an atmosphere that appears very dry.

Reports of the last days

A mass of hot air dominated the first days of the working week, but the arrival of a cold front broke in with some thunderstorms, with few accumulations, but with strong gusts of wind that caused a strong lowering of the temperature. Late frosts were recorded on Sunday morning, even with some records in some cities, with records not recorded since 1975.

The impact of late frosts in this period is very harmful, especially for new shoots. In this sense, already with the first heats we saw some advances both in the buds and in the flowering of some fruit trees. Added to this is the lack of rain, which generates a very marked stress on the plants.

State of the crop

This was underlined by Natalia Gattinoni of the Institute for climate and water of the INTA “The occurrence of the frosts in September and those recorded in the first days of October had an impact on the development of winter crops – wheat and barley – and some batches of cornwhich generated the symptoms of this type of adversity ”.

Another peculiarity that has been observed is that “some of the frosts occurred consecutively, exposing the crops to a longer period with low temperatures, and to this effect the lack of water conditions of the soils were added”, added Gattinoni.
