High tariffs for electric cars – China responds with threats to Canada

(dpa/AUTO BILD/KI) China has issued a threat to Canada after high tariffs were imposed on Chinese electric cars. The Chinese embassy in Canada announced that it would take “all necessary measures” to protect the interests of Chinese companies. A 100 percent tariff on electric cars from China could affect trade and economic relations between the two countries, the embassy said. The Canadian government’s measure is also not in the interests of Canadian consumers and companies and could harm global efforts to combat climate change.

In addition to the tariffs on electric cars, Canada has also announced a 25 percent tax on Chinese steel and aluminum products. These tariffs are intended to create fair competition conditions for the domestic industry, explained Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. She justified the measures with the state-supported policy of Chinese overcapacity and less stringent standards in worker protection and environmental protection.

In the international context, the United States and the European Union have also taken measures against Chinese electric cars. The US government also imposed a 100 percent tariff in May, while the EU Commission presented plans for different tariff rates depending on the manufacturer in June.
