The roar of the crowd at Hanazono Rugby Stadium on January 3, 2025, couldn’t mask the disappointment of the Higashi Fukuoka High School rugby team. Their national quarterfinal hopes ended with a hard-fought 12-17 loss to Tokai University‌ Osaka ⁤Kyosei. ‌while ⁣the defeat was undoubtedly painful, the team’s journey leading up to this point held a powerful lesson⁣ in‍ resilience adn the spirit​ of the game.

Last year, the team’s story captured‌ the hearts of many after appearing on ABC TV’s “Detective! Night Scoop.” The episode featured a mother who, grieving the unexpected loss of her ⁢son—a budding rugby ⁣player—undertook an ​exceptional‍ act. She joined the Higashi Fukuoka team for‌ a⁣ trial period, pretending to be‍ her son, to‌ experience firsthand the rigorous training he so passionately desired.

The program showcased the grueling circuit training, leaving viewers deeply ⁢moved by the mother’s dedication and the team’s compassionate response. ‍ Coach Fujita reflected on the experience, stating, “We almost completed the circuit training. Everyone was so impressed ‌that ⁤we became⁢ a family and accepted us as new ⁤members.”

Fukada, a ​player vying for a spot on the Japan ​high school national team, added,⁣ “It was a difficult day even for us;⁣ we were struggling to catch our breath, but seeing her persevere made me strongly⁤ feel the mother’s feelings (for​ her ‌son).”
