The news was confirmed by series creator and executive producer Tim Federle on social media.
The fourth season premiere of HSMTMTS featured appearances from several original cast members of the High School Musical films, including Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, who played the iconic couple Troy and Gabriella. In a scene discussing a fictional fourth High School Musical movie, Corbin Bleu, who portrayed Chad, gave an update on the characters’ lives as adults.
“It is our 15-year high school reunion,” Corbin explained. “My character Chad is married to Taylor. Martha is a world-class choreographer. Ryan is happily partnered.” Lucas Grabeel, who played Ryan, even revealed that his character is expecting twins.
However, it seems that Troy and Gabriella are facing some challenges in their relationship. Corbin revealed that the couple is in couples’ therapy, suggesting that their journey is not as smooth as fans might have hoped.
The final season of HSMTMTS will also feature cameos from Bart Johnson, who portrayed Coach Bolton, and Alyson Reed, who played Ms. Darbus. This scene confirms a detail that director Kenny Ortega had always wanted to include in the original High School Musical movie but was unsure if audiences were ready for it at the time.
“I was concerned because it was family and kids, that Disney might not be ready to cross that line and move into that territory yet,” Ortega explained. “So, I just took it upon myself to make choices that I felt that those who were watching would grab. They would see it, they would feel it, they would know it, and they would identify with it. And that is what happened.”
