A high school girls’ basketball game in Yonkers, New York, was canceled this week after players on the local team hurled anti-Semitic slurs at their Jewish opponents, who had to be escorted by officers to leave the field safely, the New York Post reported.
The girls’ teams from Leffell School, a private Jewish school in Hartsdale, and Roosevelt High School, a public high school in Yonkers, competed Thursday. According to the New York Public Schools Alliance, a group fighting anti-Semitism, a Roosevelt player insulted a Leffell opponent by calling her a “dirty Jew” and expressing support for Hamas. Robin Bosworth, Leffell’s senior player, testified in the student newspaper The Lion’s Roar about the growing hostility and aggressive comments she experienced. At the end of the third quarter, faced with the brutality of the opposing team and anti-Semitic insults, including cries of “free Palestine”, Leffell’s players chose to leave the match to preserve their dignity and their convictions.
Since October 7, anti-Semitism has exploded in the United States. The New York Police Department last week reported 31 anti-Semitic crimes in December 2023.
