COVID-19 is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and death in the short and long term, reported the electronic edition “Medical Express”.
This is according to the results of a study of nearly 160,000 people, published in the magazine “Cardiovascular Research”, the publication of the European Society of Cardiology.
Compared to uninfected people, the odds of death in COVID-19 patients were up to 81 times higher in the first three weeks of infection and remained five times higher up to 18 months later.
“Patients with COVID-19 are more likely to develop multiple cardiovascular conditions compared to uninfected people, which probably also contributes to the increased risk of death,” said study author Prof. Yang Wong of the University of Hong Kong, China.
“The results suggest that patients with coronavirus should be monitored for at least one year after recovery from the acute phase of the disease for the diagnosis of cardiovascular complications of the infection, which are part of the long COVID-19,” said the professor.
